FEET v FASHION: Steve Webb

Feet v Fashion

My name is Steve Webb, and I trade as a farrier in the West Midlands of England. I completed a four year apprenticeship with a Master Farrier, with indentures to the Worshipful Company of Farriers and involving block release courses at Hereford College. I now have almost thirty years experience self-employed.

From my first days in the horse world I have found the craft and science of horse-shoeing a fascinating subject and I am happy to say that I still learn something new every day.

There is, of course, an ideal foot to be aspired to in shoeing, but this should vary between every horse/pony depending on the type or breed and work involved. A heavy horse or cob type moving mostly at the walk or trot will have a foot and action that is different to a light “performance” type doing fast work.

Over the years I have been made aware of methods of trimming the foot and applying shoes to achieve specific results that fashion or tradition dictates.

The above extract is taken from an article by Steve Webb in issue 61 of Welsh Breeds News.
